Skirt Over Pants Trend: Hot or Not?

Skirt Over Pants Trend

The latest trend of wearing the skirt over the trousers might sound absurd on the paper and remind you of the mid-nineties odd skirt and pants ensembles. But before starting setting your Fall/Winter wardrobe, take a look at the latest collections for the inspiration. The times of the skorts are left in the past, while another trend got on its peak and was demonstrated in the Fall/Winter 2012 collections by the high end designers like Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

In Louis Vuitton collection the dresses made from the heavy wool went all the way till the ankle leaving the trousers looking out below the hem lines. Miuccia Prada in turn decorated the colorful skirts with the a-line silhouettes with oversized jewels. Raf Simons debuted with his first Couture collection for Christian Dior by teaming the ball and strapless gowns with the split in the front with the black cigarette trousers.

One of the Fall’s trends this year is wearing a skirt over pants. Now while it might be a warm style solution for the cold weather the skirt over pants look can be quite difficult to pull off. Designers offer to sport a skirt with classic tailored pants as well as the hit of the season – cropped trousers. We think there are three main factors to take into consideration before taking on this trend:

  • no denim
  • elegant silhouette
  • watch proportions

Denim often looks strange with other types of fabrics so it’s better to opt for other fabrics in skirt and pants as well. An elegant silhouette can be achieved with the right proportions. Since the skirt+pant look can make the figure look bulky and overdressed it’s very important to watch proportions. For instance, a full skirt will look better with skinny pants rather than baggy pants.

If you are not courageous enough for trying on this original trend, consider wearing the turnic over trousers. This way you won’t stand out from the crowd and still stick to the hottest trend of the season. It is the simplest way to incorporate this skirt-over-trousers trend in your fall winter wardrobe. Designers Roksanda Ilincic and Marc Jacobs used this concept in their Pre-Spring 2013 collections.

So what do you think about this trend? Is it hot or not?
